Why Does a Near Death Experience Wipe Away the Fear of Death?

While looking into the matter of the profound change that a Near Death Experience brings in the experiencer, we have to consider the difference between the merely psychological perceptions and the profound neurological insights into life.
The psychological perceptions are based on what is called ratiocination, that is, through logical syllogisms.
In short, it uses the head only! However, for many practical situations this approach does very well - such as in scientific discoveries, engineering designs and family issues like managing one's mother-in-law (no offence meant!).
When it comes to the deeper issues of life, neurological level perceptions and intuition are required.
It is a matter of direct sensing beyond the influence of words.
Human beings are so used to the 'head' way that they rarely appreciate the value of direct-sensing that can be referred to as the 'inner being' way.
Through self-awareness, however, people can move towards the 'inner being' and so towards stable peace in life.
One may say that this brings changes at the neurological levels and that is how those changes are relatively more stable than the ones brought about by the merely psychological, belief-based conclusions.
J.
Krishnamurti says that radical transformation of the mind is associated with alchemical change at the cerebral level.
In the case of NDE, the experience brings in a cataclysmic impact on the consciousness of the person, resulting in alchemical changes in the brain as an inevitable consequence.
The NDEer, while being in the other dimension, is able to sense the truth directly without the help of words - this is one reason why he or she is unable to convey the perceptions to others accurately with the help of the language in common parlance.
The non-verbal message is not only deeply impressed on the consciousness but also a lot is conveyed in a very short time.
Both these are impossible if the communication takes place verbally.
People do derive some comfort about death based on the belief system that they rely on.
This is, no doubt, of some value.
In the absence of it, the mental discomfiture can be quite unsettling.
However, such perceptions being sectarian in nature, they cannot have the completeness, profundity and universality of the direct, non-verbal perceptions.
It is this totality in the perception at the time of NDE that makes it non-sectarian and so capable of bringing about transformation at the neurological level.
Apart from its totality, the NDE is like a shock wave in the consciousness that hits hard at the very root of things.
That is how the fear of death gets washed away with finality.
This is also the reason why they develop extra sensory perceptions (ESP) in the aftermath of the NDE, indicating that neurological changes have taken place in the person.
The above descriptions help us understand why the NDE wipes away the fear of mortality in the experiencer.
While being in the other dimension, the consciousness is freed from the perishable things and it understands its essence of immortality.
This sensing is fundamentally responsible for the profound change in the outlook on life and the ending of it.
One direct result of this is the purging of the consternation about death.
The NDEer comes out clear on the fact that what is perishable is not one's true self.
This is echoed in the following verses by Lord Krishna in the Bhagawad Gita: 2.
20 The Self is neither born nor does It ever die.
It is unborn, changeless and ancient.
It is not extinguished when the body is dead.
2.
22 Just as a man casts off his worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, the Self casts off worn-out bodies and enters new ones.
2.
23 Weapons do not cleave the Self, fire does not burn It, water does not wet It and the wind does not dry It.
2.
24 The Self is eternal, all-pervading, stable, immovable and ancient The above remarks of Krishna apply to all human beings irrespective of what religion they belong to.
Anything related to the ultimate truth has that universality and non-sectarian character.
It is interesting to note that the central characteristics of NDEs too are universal in nature, thus making them indubitably a matter of spirituality touching at the ultimate truth.
More on the effects of NDEs are dealt with in this website on spirituality.
