Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Test-fit the gate between the gate posts to determine which way the gate will swing. Decide if the hinges will be mounted on the frame side or the infill surface of the gate.
2

Mark the side of the gate on which the hinges will be attached. Mark the hinge side and the latch side for of the gate.
3

Lay the gate on a flat surface with the marked surface up. Arrange the hinges on the edge of the gate so the edges of the hinge straps are aligned with the lateral edges of the gate and the straps are positioned over the rails. Whether the hinges are installed on the front or back of the gate, you must affix them to the rails first.
4

Attach the hinges to the gate with screws included in the hinge kits, using a drill and driving bit,
5

Place scrap lumber on the ground between the gate posts to support the gate while you attach it to the gate post. Position the gate between the posts. Place a carpenter's square against the side of the hinged side of the frame, or stile. Adjust the position of the gate until the stile is plumb. Place shims, as needed, under the gate to hold it in position.
6

Center the gate between the gate posts. Recheck to ensure the stile is plumb. The hinge-side of the gate must be flush with the surface of the gate post that will support the hinge. Wedge shims between the gate posts and stiles. Use a mallet to tap them in place. Continue adding shims until the gate is vertical in two planes and temporarily and securely fixed in place.
7

Attach the hinges to the gate post with screws included in the hinge kits, using a drill and driving bit. Remove the shims and lumber used to temporarily hold the gate in place.
8

Screw a narrow strip of lumber to the inside of the gate post, if desired, to create a gate-stop. A gate-stop prevents the gate from swinging too far as the gate is closed. While it is not strictly necessary, a gate stop may prevent unnecessary stress on the gate's hinges. You may paint or stain the finished gate and add a latch.
