Natural Sleep Aids - Relaxation Techniques

103 4
The problem of Insomnia is prevalent in our country.
It is estimated that over 12 million people suffer from Insomnia of some sort on a regular basis.
Many people have tried both over the counter sleep aids, or the prescription ones we see the commercials for all the time on TV.
The problem is that either they don't work, and you are still awake tossing and turning, or they work too well, and you feel tired and groggy all day as well.
You begin to believe that you just need to accept being tired.
But this is not the case.
There are natural sleep aids out there that work, and that have none of the negative side effects we don't want.
Among the most powerful natural sleep aid doesn't involve you taking any tablets at all.
Relaxation Techniques can be a powerful way to help you sleep quickly and safely.
1.
Progressive Body Relaxation
- Lay down or sit in a comfortable spot with your arms down and your sides and your legs straight.
Starting at the top of your body, tense up all the muscles of your face: clench your teeth, squint up your eyes, grimace, hold every face and head muscle as tight as possible while you inhale slowly and count to 8.
Then exhale letting your face go completely lax, feeling the stress drain out of your body.
Repeat this moving down your body using all your muscle groups: shoulders, chest, abdomen, arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, even toes.
As you do this you will notice huge amounts of stress and tension flowing from your body.
Once you've done this for a while and can move from muscle group to muscle group quickly, it will feel as if you are pouring "liquid relaxation" on your head and it is flowing down to cover your entire body.
2.
Visualization
- Again, lay or sit in a comfortable spot.
Picture a relaxing scene in your mind.
It is important that you use all of your senses while imagining your scene.
What does it look like? Sound like? Feel like? For example if your relaxing scene is a ocean beach, don't just picture the water and the sand, also feel the breeze in your hair, feel the sand beneath your feet, smell the salt air, hear the waves crashing, taste the cocktail you're enjoying.
Whatever your scene is, the more senses you use the better this technique will work for you.
Using relaxation techniques as a natural sleep aid allows you to relax your body and calm your mind.
This will allow you to drift off to sleep with a sense of peace that will carry you through the night and perhaps even the next day as well.
This is a much better side effect than the tired and groggy feeling you get from over the counter or prescription sleep aids.
The best part is because you are using no drugs or chemicals you can use these techniques together or in conjunction with other natural sleep aids or even medications to send you off to dreamland in peaceful slumber.
