How to Install Cat 5 Cable Ends

    • 1). Cut the Cat 5 cable to whatever length is needed using wire cutters or the wire cutters potentially included in the crimping tool. Make the cut straight and clean.

    • 2). Strip off roughly an inch of the insulation around the smaller wires inside the cable. This exposes the wires, and some crimping tools come with a wire stripper built-in as well. During this process, be careful of the small inner wires to avoid damaging them in any way at all, which will make the cable useless.

    • 3). Separate the inner wires by pair, since they should be wrapped in four pairs. Ideally, the pairs will come color-coded and this makes the process far simpler. Untwist the wires.

    • 4). Order the wires in compliance with the wiring standard established by the Telecommunications Industry Association, known as the EIA/TIA-568 Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard. Align them in the order of white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown. Line up the wires in this order so that they stick out of the insulation perfectly straight.

    • 5). Cut off 1 mm from the ends of the wires so they all stand at the same height, 1 inch out of the insulation.

    • 6). Attach one RJ-45 connector to the end of the cable with the exposed wires. This involves holding the connector with the plastic release clip facing away from you and the opening facing to the ground.

    • 7). Grip the cable by the insulation cover to keep it in place, and insert the sorted wires into the opening of the connector, making sure that they stay in the same order as they enter the connector.

    • 8). Push the wires all the way to the end of the connector, checking the top end of the connector to make sure that every wire made it all the way through to the end and the ends of all eight wires is visible. If not, pull all of the wires out and start over.

    • 9). Push the insulation cover up into the connector as far as possible.

    • 10

Crimp the RJ-45 to the cable with the crimping tool without crushing the connector.

Repeat the process on the other end of the cable.
