How to Crochet Mittens for Kids

    • 1). Take a few basic measurements. Measure around your child's wrist and round to the nearest inch; this is measurement A. Measure the widest part of her palm to the nearest inch; this is measurement B. Measure the distance from the base of her palm to the base of her thumb to the nearest inch; this is measurement C. Measure from the base of her palm to the tip of her tallest finger to the nearest inch; this is measurement D.

    • 2). Crochet the cuff of the mitten; make 11 chain stitches. Single crochet in the second stitch from the hook and every chain across. Chain one and turn, then work one single crochet stitch through the back loops only of every stitch across; repeat this until the piece measures about one inch smaller than measurement A. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail. Use the tail to sew the cuff of the mitten into a circle by sewing the two short ends together with a large eye blunt needle.

    • 3). Attach your yarn with your hook to the top edge of the cuff. Make one single crochet stitch in each row around the cuff. Join with a slip stitch. Increase the size of the mitten by making two single crochet stitches in every stitch around for the second round.

    • 4). Make one single crochet in every stitch around for round three; then increase again in round four by making two stitches in every stitch around. Continue to increase in this manner until the mitten circumference measures two times measurement B.

    • 5). Crochet evenly around until the height of the mitten matches measurement C. To do this, make one single crochet in every single crochet around and join with a slip stitch at the end of each round, then start the next round with one chain stitch. When you reach the height of measurement C, for the next round chain one and turn, then work your single crochet stitches back in the opposite direction. Leave the last three stitches unworked.

    • 6). For the following round, chain one and work one single crochet in each stitch around, then chain three and join back up into a circle. Continue to crochet evenly around from that point forward until your mitten reaches a height that is 1 inch shorter than measurement D.

    • 7). Decrease the top of your mitten. To do this, make single crochet two together stitches all the way around the next few rounds until your mitten has fewer than 10 stitches. Cut your working yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread that tail onto a large eye blunt needle and pass it through all of the stitches in the top of your mitten, pulling tightly like a drawstring. Pass the needle through to the inside of the mitten, tie a knot and weave in the loose ends.

    • 8). Attach your yarn and hook at the hole you made for the thumb opening. Make one single crochet in each stitch evenly around this hole, then make one single crochet in every stitch around until the thumb portion is long enough. Decrease by working single crochet two together all the way around, and finish the thumb the same way you finished the top of the mitten.

    • 9). Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for a second mitten.
