How to Draw Flowers With Cross-hatching
- 1). Draw a light outline of your flowers with the pencil. Draw two circles with space in between them. Add the petals by drawing elongated ovals that radiate from the circles. You can draw thin and long ovals or short and fat ovals, depending on how you want your flowers to look. Add at least 8 petals per flower.
- 2). Draw two thin and vertical parallel lines as the stem of one flower. Repeat on the other flower. Add two leaves per flower, by drawing a simple oval with a pointed end, towards the bottom of each stem.
- 3). Add short and light parallel lines inside the flower. Draw the lines parallel with the outside contours of the flower. Curve the lines where the contours are curved and straighten the lines where the contours are straight. Curve the lines on the petals of the flower and keep them straight on the stems. This will add depth to your flower sketch. If you want darker shading, draw more lines closer together.
- 4). Add more short lines, but this time draw them perpendicular to the first set of lines. This crosshatching effect will darken the shaded areas of your picture even more. Match the shape and length of these crosshatching lines to your first lines. Areas with little or no shade should have few if any lines of crosshatching.
