Cellular Shades Installation
- 1). Examine the top of the headrail of the cellular shade and a mounting bracket to determine how the headrail fits into the bracket, which will vary according to the manufacturer. This will ease engaging the headrail into the installed mounting brackets later.
- 2). Climb the ladder and measure the depth of the window frame or window opening. A minimum depth of 1/2 inch is required to install the mounting bracket and a depth of 2 1/4 inches to 3 5/8 inches, depending on the depth of the shade, for the shade to be fully recessed when installed. Measure 2 inches to 3 inches in from the corner of the top inside edge of the window frame or window opening and use the pencil to mark the bracket placement measurement. Do the same at the other side of the window frame or window opening. Place the side of the level against the inside of the top of the window frame to check that it is level. If not, you may have to employ shims (thin wedges of wood or plastic placed between the top of the bracket and the mounting surface) when installing the support brackets to be sure the brackets are at exactly the same height.
- 3). Climb the ladder and hold a mounting bracket against the bracket placement mark and center the top of the bracket on the mark. Use the pencil to mark the position of the screw holes in the top of the bracket on the top inside edge of the window frame or window opening.
- 4). Drill the screw holes at the pencil marks with the 3/32-inch drill bit. This will ease the insertion of the mounting bracket screws.
- 5). Install the mounting brackets using the electric drill with a flat head, Phillips head or hex head drill bit depending on the type of screws being employed. Wider shades may require additional support. For shades over 36 inches wide, add a mounting bracket for every additional 36 inches of width or portion thereof. Space the additional bracket(s) evenly between the brackets at each end and install.
If installing into dry wall use wall anchors, according to the package directions, to secure the mounting brackets. - 6). Place the shade on the floor or a table or desk work surface with the cord facing you. Pull the cord to raise the shade fully to the "up" position. Pull the cord to the right to lock the shade cord.
- 7). Climb the ladder with the shade secured in the "up" position with the side displaying the shade cord facing you and engage the headrail into the mounting brackets as outlined in Step 1.
- 8). Raise and lower the shade to be sure it is functioning properly. Lower the shade by pulling the cord down and toward the center of the shade to release the locking mechanism. Raise the shade by pulling down on the cord and pull the cord to the right to lock it at the desired height.
- 1). Examine the top of the headrail of the cellular shade and a mounting bracket to determine how the headrail fits into the bracket, which will vary according to the manufacturer. This will ease engaging the headrail into the installed mounting brackets later.
- 2). Climb the ladder and hold the shade, lowered to the down position by pulling the cord toward the center of the shade, at the desired height and centered over the window opening. Use the pencil to lightly mark the mounting surface on each end of the headrail and return the shade to the floor. Climb the ladder and measure 2 inches to 3 inches in from the headrail width mark and use the pencil to mark the bracket placement measurement at the desired height on the face of the window frame or the wall above the top of the window opening, making sure that the pencil marks are at exactly the same height on both sides of the window.
- 3). Hold a mounting bracket at the correct height and center the back of the bracket on the bracket placement pencil mark. A minimum flat mounting surface of 1 1/4 inches in height is required. Use the pencil to mark the position of the screw holes in the back of the bracket on the face each side of the top of the widow frame or wall above the window opening. The mounting brackets may have to be installed on optional extension brackets to extend farther from the wall in order to clear the window frame or other obstacles below when raising and lowering the shade.
- 4). Follow Steps 4 to 8 of inside mount installation instructions.
- 5). Install optional hold down brackets, for outside mounted shades, if desired, to prevent the shade from swaying when in the "down" position. Fully lower the shade and engage the pin in the side of the hold down bracket into the pin hole in the end of the bottom rail. Use the pencil to mark the position of the screw holes in the hold down bracket on the window frame or wall. Install the hold down brackets with screws using the electric drill and appropriate screwdriver head.
Before raising the shade, the bottom rail must be disengaged from the hold down brackets.
