Making Mineral Powder Cosmetics
- The ingredients for mineral foundation make-up are micronized titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, magnesium stearate, yellow, red and brown iron oxide pigments, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil and essential oil. Optional ingredients are bismuth oxychloride and kaolin clay. For a matte finish, use sericite mica. To make the mineral blush, use micronized titanium dioxide, bismuth oxychloride, zinc oxide lo-micron, magnesium stearate, yellow, red and brown iron oxide, and pink pearl powder. To make a mineral bronzer, use the same ingredients with bronze mica. The ingredients remain the same for eye shadow, concealer and finishing powder with color changes accordingly. See Resources (below) for specific recipes.
Buy a mortar and pestle, sifter jars, measuring spoons and cosmetic brushes for application. - The first step in making mineral make-up is to combine the dry ingredients using the mortar and pestle. Ensure the dry ingredients are well mixed and there are no clumps. For the foundation, mix the micronized titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and magnesium stearate. According to your shade selection, mix in the iron oxides until you achieve the desired color. The zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and sericite mica will lighten the color if it's too dark. When the bismuth oxychloride is added, it will give a metallic tint to your foundation, blush and eye shadow. Sericite mica gives a low luster to your foundation, creating a matte finish, and is added last after the oils. To create a bronzing powder, mix the same ingredients and include the bronze mica according to the shade you seek. To make mineral eye shadows, again you'll use titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, magnesium stearate and adjust the yellow, red, and brown iron oxide to achieve the desired shade. Remember to make notes about how much you add so you'll be able to duplicate your recipe.
To make a finishing powder, mix the sericite mica with corn starch, boron nitride and either zinc or magnesium stearate. Slowly add a pinch of sparkle gold, pearl pink and bronze mica powders in a plastic bag with a zipper. Add the mica powders slowly until you achieve the desired shade. - Once the powders are mixed well and no clumps exist, add the oils. The jojoba oil, vitamin E oil and an essential oil of your choice are mixed slowly into the powder. The mixing is slow in order to ensure there are no clumps in your mineral makeup. The mineral blush, eye shadow and bronzer you make will use only the jojoba oil--and, if you choose, an essential oil for scent.
Once all of the ingredients are well mixed, fill the sifter jars. Be sure to label them accordingly. Mineral make-up should be stored out of the sunlight and in a cool place. For supplies, see links in the Resources section.
