Many people move from their homes to gain extra space. Instead of moving, building an addition can add extra space and give the home a brand new feel. There are many different types of additions, from the simplistic to full-blown construction projects. Talk to a qualified construction company to review the many options. - A porch is an outdoor living space that enhances curb appeal. As an informal extension of the living rooms, it also adds an extra area for entertaining. Porch additions give shade and offer a place to relax in pleasant weather. Porch additions may be built either on the front of houses or the rear.
- A sunroom is an enclosed porch specifically built to allow as much light in as possible. Sunrooms often have large floor-to-ceiling windows to create extra indoor living space with an outdoor view. They are often used as bonus relaxation rooms.
- Decks are elevated outside living spaces usually made from wood or vinyl. They are often used as extra dining space or a barbecue area when built off the kitchen. Decks may include outside stairs leading to the backyard. A deck addition adds outside entertaining space to a home.
- A bump-out adds extra space to the interior of the home while increasing the house dimensions. Usually used to open a small room, a wall is taken down and rebuilt a few feet out. A bump-out can give a room an interesting design feature. It can also give a small kitchen the extra space it needs to become a better functioning space.
- A single room addition is a good choice to add a bonus room to the first floor. The new standard-sized space is ideal for an extra bedroom, mudroom, family room or garage.
- A wing addition is used when a more than a single room is needed. An example is adding an in-law suite. The house must sit on a lot large enough to hold the addition.
- A second story addition allows extra room additions in cases of small lot spaces. Instead of adding on the side of the house, the addition is built on top of the structure. The existing foundation and walls have to support the structure to make this a viable option.
- A way to add space to a second or third floor is adding a dormer. A dormer is a window extending off a sloping roof to create head space. The dormer can turn an unusable attic space into functional space. They are also attractive architectural elements.
