Is a Moonglow Pear Tree Self-Pollinating?

    Features

    • The Moonglow is a vigorous, healthy species of pear tree. Its fruit is large and nearly free from grit cells, making this pear ideal for eating.

    Pollination Types

    • Pear trees come in two types: self pollinating and cross pollinating. The Moonglow is a cross pollinating breed, meaning it must be planted with a suitable cultivar tree to bear fruit.

    Cross Pollination

    • Cross pollination occurs when two compatible trees are planted in the same orchard. Compatible trees bloom at the same time, allowing them to pollinate each other.

    Weather

    • Autumn and spring frosts can damage new buds, causing trees to produce less fruit. Mild weather may cause Moonglow pear trees to produce more fruit than they can support. The trees will then drop excess, non-mature fruit.

    Recommended Cultivars

    • Moonglows are compatible with Seckle pears. Other acceptable cultivars include Dawn, Waite, Mangess and Starkling Delicious pear trees.
