How to Tile a Kichen Wall

    • 1). Measure and draw a detailed sketch of your wall. Add the tile to the drawing as it will be installed on the wall. This will help you determine where to place the tile, minimize cuts and help design the layout for the tile.

    • 2). Measure and mark the tile spacing on the wall with a pencil. Draw a straight line across the wall where the top of the first tile will rest. Make a line for every third row of tile. These lines will help guide installation and make sure the tiles are straight and evenly spaced. Also measure and mark the exact center of the area the tiles will go.

    • 3). Spread ¼ inch of tile adhesive along the bottom of the wall with a notched trowel. Set a tile into the adhesive. Twist the tile slightly to set it firmly into the adhesive.

    • 4). Set the remaining whole tiles in this same manner. Work from the bottom, center of the wall and work out and up across the wall. Keep the tile evenly spaced by measuring the space between the tiles or using plastic spacers. Check your work often with a level.

    • 5). Measure and mark any tiles that need to be cut. Make a chalk mark across the back of the tile. Trim the tile with a tile cutter.

    • 6). Spread tile adhesive across the back of the cut tiles. Set the tiles in place on the wall. Let the adhesive dry overnight.

    • 7). Spread grout across the tiles and into the spaces between the tiles with a grout float. Slide the grout float back and forth to evenly distribute the grout. Dip a sponge into clean water. Wipe away all grout residues from the fronts of the tiles.
