California Laws for Motor Homes
- The California Vehicle Code Refers to motor homes as "house cars." Any vehicle that is made to be lived in falls under this classification. The legally defined length limit for motor homes is 40 ft. If your motor home is under 45 ft. but more than 40 ft., it is considered an over-length motor home.
- To operate a motor home up to 40 ft. long, you need to have a basic class C driver's license. If your motor home is over 40 ft. but still under 45 ft., you need to have a class B license with a motor home endorsement.
- Depending on a vehicle's length from its kingpin to rear axle, it may be restricted from using some California roads. Signs are posted on these roads.
- Out-of-state drivers must be able to prove that they are licensed to operate a motor home in their home state.
