How to Build Your Own Mini Golf Course

    • 1). Line up the deck balusters along the edge of the medium-density fiberboard. Make marks to ensure that they will surround the whole sheet. The balusters should lie flush with the edges and corner to corner. Cut the balusters to length using the miter box and hand saw.

    • 2). Line up the balusters to the edge of the fiberboard. Squeeze strips of wood glue onto the balusters one at a time with a few inches in between strips. Apply a dot of Crazy Glue in the spaces between the wood glue strips. Quickly attach the baluster to the fiberboard. The Crazy Glue will keep the baluster in position while the stronger wood glue bond forms.

    • 3). Make a mark slightly off-center on the fiberboard. Drill a hole at the mark using the drill/driver fitted with a 4-inch hole saw. Stop halfway, flip the fiberboard over and finish the hole from the other side to prevent splintering.

    • 4). Stretch the felt over a flat surface such as a work table and hold it in place with spring clamps. Place the fiberboard on a plastic drop cloth (in an area away from the felt). Spray the top of the fiberboard and the felt with adhesive. Let them dry per the instructions for the adhesive.

    • 5). Stick the adhesive-coated end of the fiberboard to the adhesive-coated end of the felt. Spray more adhesive around the hole and the balusters on the bottom of the panel. Let it dry once again.

    • 6). Cut away the excess felt on each corner using the framing square and utility knife. Hold the square corner to corner and cut a line one and a half inches in each direction. Cut the felt away diagonally from that point.

    • 7). Lift and wrap the overlapping felt around the balusters, pulling the felt evenly on all sides. You will need assistants to hold the felt in place as you perform this step to ensure that is wrapped tightly.

    • 8). Cut the felt in the hole into wedges (think of it like a pizza). Pull the wedges through the hole and wrap them tightly in order to cover the sides of the hole.

    • 9). Cut a two-inch piece of the PVC pipe using a hacksaw. Turn the panel over and insert the pipe into the hole. It should fit easily.

Line the felt-covered board with composite wood balusters. Due to their weight, they will stay in place without adhesive, although you can use it if you desire. You can add them at any point to adjust your holes and create obstacles. The balls will bounce off of them upon contact.

Cut patches out of a green welcome map or artificial turf. These patches will create the "rough." You can place them as desired around the course. They will create obstacles and add an extra layer of challenge for the players.

Cut the lower three inches off of the five-gallon buckets. You will be using these pieces to create a loop-de-loop for the ball to spin around (think of it as a loop on a roller coaster). Cut out the bottoms, leaving a one-inch band. Cut an opening through each circular piece and combine the open ends to make a channel before pulling them apart to make a loop. Secure the loop with duct tape and place a block of composite wood balusters in between to keep the loop apart. Screw the sides of the loop to the baluster.

Cut a row of three holes in the center, about twelve inches in, of a piece of fiberboard. Flip the fiberboard over and glue three and one-quarter inch composite legs in each corner. This will create a platform. Tape a flexible plastic sign to the edge of the fiberboard. Wrap the top of the platform and the ramp in green felt. Cut out three holes.

Insert the elbow fittings through the holes. This will create ramps for the balls to fall through and move in different directions when they come out the other end. This will add one final challenge to the players of your mini golf course.
