Coastal areas require special consideration when planting trees and shrubs. Some species cannot tolerate the salt that permeates the soil, and salt spray can damage foliage of those shrubs that are not adapted to coastal conditions. There are a number of plants that can tolerate such a high-salt environment, however. Your local university cooperative extension service can help you choose plants that will do well in a coastal home landscape.

    Bottlebrush

    • Bottlebrush is a shrub rated for climate zones 8 to 10 and can be found throughout the southern U.S. It blooms in late spring and early summer, producing feathery, brush-like flowers that give the shrub its name. The shrub prefers full sun for most of the day and can grow in most soil types, except very heavy, poorly-drained sites. They will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. North Carolina State University's site recommends bottlebrush as suitable for coastal landscapes.

    Dogwood

    • Dogwood is another type of shrub that can be used along coastal areas to help control erosion. It is sometimes used in rehabilitated wetland areas. It can withstand drought, but prefers a more moist environment. Several varieties of dogwood are suitable for coastal areas, including Tatarian dogwood, flowering dogwood, red twig dogwood and gray dogwood. Dogwood produces white flowers in the spring and red foliage in the autumn.

    Honeysuckle

    • Honeysuckle's fragrant flowers make it a desirable addition to any landscape. Colors include white, yellow, pink and red. It comes in many different varieties, a few of which can tolerate salty, coastal conditions. According to Virginia Tech's Cooperative Extension, Tatarian honeysuckle can be safely planted in coastal areas.

    Red Chokeberry

    • Red chokeberry produces white flowers in mid-spring, red berries in summer and bright red foliage in autumn. It likes full sun to partial shade and tolerates either dry or wet sites. The University of Illinois Extension service designates red chokeberry as salt tolerant.

    Rose of Sharon

    • Rose of Sharon is an attractive ornamental shrub that produces large flowers on open, green branches and can grow in either sun or partial shade. It blooms in colors of pink, white, red, blue or lavender. It can thrive in coastal environments in any kind of soil.

    Sumac

    • Sumac is an evergreen shrub that can grow in coastal regions. It produces decorative berries on dark green foliage and blooms in the spring. Flowers are clustered in heavy panicles. Both smooth and shining sumac is suitable for coastal plantings. Sumac is resistant to deer, wind, pollution and sloping terrains.
