Impasto

• 1). Choose a figure or section of your canvas to which you would like to give particular emphasis. Choosing a central figure or object in the foreground would be best.
  
  
• 2). Mix the appropriate color of paint on your palette. Dip your brush in this color. Apply this color to the canvas thickly. Clean your brush with water and a dry towel.
  
  
• 3). Scrape some of this same color onto your palette knife. Apply this color thickly to the same area that you applied it before with your brush. Spread the color as desired, leaving raised, thick sections of paint on the canvas. Wipe your knife clean.
  
  
• 4). Mix a new color on your palette. Dip your brush in this color. Apply this color where it belongs on your chosen object or figure. Clean your brush.
  
  
• 5). Scrape some of this same color onto your palette knife. Apply this color thickly to the same section of the canvas. Layer multiple times of necessary so the paint has a raised texture and appearance. Wipe your knife clean.
