How to Sew Patiala
- 1). Wash and iron the fabric. Measure your waist and hips with the tape measure. Then measure the distance between your waist and your ankles: this will be the pants' height.
- 2). Draft the three pattern pieces (waistband, main piece and side piece) with a pen on the scroll of plain white paper or sheets of newspaper taped together. The waistband is a rectangle shape; its height is 11 inches and its width is your waist measurement plus 6 inches. The main piece looks like a rectangle that has had one of its bottom corners (in the shape of a triangle) chopped off. The height is the pants height minus 7 inches on the longer side; on the shorter side the height is 13 inches. The width of the upper part is your hips measurement divided by two, while the width of the lower part is 6 inches. The side piece is a rectangle shape; its height is the pants' height minus 7 inches and its width is 10 inches.
- 3). Cut the pattern pieces out and lay them on top of the fabric. Cut out one waistband, two main pieces and two side pieces. Use a seam allowance of ½ inch when you sew. Sew the longer side of one of the main pieces to one side of one of the side panels. Repeat with the other identical pieces. Sew the free side of one of the side panels to the long sloping side of the main piece it is attached to; this will create a leg piece. Do the same to the other pieces to form the second leg piece. Each leg piece should have a short side that has yet to be sewn; sew them together. Tuck inside ½ inch of the fabric at the leg openings and sew. Sew the bottom of the waistband to the top of the legs.
- 4). Fold inside ½ inch of the fabric at the top of the waistband and sew. Clip off the extra fabric. Fold inside 1 ¼ inches of the fabric at the top of the waistband to serve as the casing. Sew along the edge of the fold, as close as possible to allow room for the drawstring.
- 5). Insert a piece of string or ribbon into the casing to serve as the drawstring. If you have trouble inserting it, use a piece of wire or an undone hanger to aid you.
