How to Put a Regular Fixture in Place of a Recessed Light
- 1). Turn off the electricity to the room you are working in at the household circuit breaker.
- 2). Set up a ladder underneath the recessed light.
- 3). Unscrew the light bulb from the recessed light socket.
- 4). Loosen the screws inside the metal canister in the ceiling with a screwdriver.
- 5). Push up on the metal canister to move it out of the way.
- 6). Touch a non-contact voltmeter to the wires coming from the wire connection box in the ceiling. If the voltmeter lights up, the electricity is still on. Check the circuit breaker again before proceeding.
- 7). Unscrew the plastic wire nuts on the recessed light canister by hand and remove the wires.
- 8). Cut the ceiling with a jig saw so that the hole is square and slightly larger than the electrical box.
- 9). Pull the wires from the ceiling through the electrical box.
- 10
Cut a 6-inch length of copper wire and wrap it around the grounding screw at the bottom of the electrical box. Tighten down the screw to secure the wire in place. - 11
Secure the metal cross-bar for the light fixture to the screw holes on the electrical box. - 12
Connect the light fixture to the cross-bar. Refer to the instructions that came with the light. - 13
Connect the white wires together with a wire nut. Connect the unmarked hot wire to the black or red hot wire in the ceiling box with wire nuts. Connect the remaining neutral wires together with another wire nut. - 14
Restore power to the room at the breaker box and test the light.
