Campus Safety
When it comes to our children, campus safety is all important. When they are with us and we can see them, it is much easier to look out for their safety. It is when they are away from us that makes this more difficult. When our kids go to college or go off to live on their own, sometimes hundreds or even thousands of miles away, it is difficult to watch out for them and protect them as we feel we should.
However, taking a few simple steps can help them realize certain dangers and protect themselves against them. Here are some precautions I would encourage students or those living alone to take:
1. When walking across campus at night or walking to your car, do not do so alone. Walk with someone or in groups if possible.
2. Walk in well lit areas.
3. Carry a cell phone, especially when alone. If walking across campus at night, call and talk to someone while walking.
4. Let your friends know where you are going and an approximate return time.
5. Lock your doors. Do not leave them propped open while you run a quick errand.
6. Be alert for danger. Check the back seat of your car before entering.
7. Never open the door to strangers.
8. Carry a personal alarm.
Here is what I would recommend for protective products for young ladies attending college or living on their own:
1. A door brace - It works on a regular hinged door or sliding glass door. This is a very important protective device for both safety and peace of mind while in a dorm room.
2. Pepper spray - a non lethal paralyzing agent which will sting the eyes and cause an attacker to gag, giving you enough time to get away. One form of pepper spray is disguised as lipstick.
3. A kubotan or heart attack - Both can be attached to a keychain and are used to jab an attacker or apply pressure to parts of the body.
4. A stun gun or TASER -- both non lethal paralyzing weapons will disable an assailant and allow you to get away.
Do not think it is only our daughters who need protection. Our sons are a priority also. They can use some of the same protective devices that our daughters use. They are also alone walking across campus at night, and although they want to appear completely in control, there is nothing like playing it safe carrying a pepper spray or some other protective device such as a TASER or kubotan.
One reads newspaper articles about attacks on campus. Yet one rarely reads about the victim carrying a protective device to insure her safety.. She is understandably confused and afraid, but if she were carrying something as simple as pepper spray or a personal alarm, an attack might have been thwarted. We do not think of this before it happens, only after. As a parent, think about having your son or daughter prepared for anything that might happen. Encourage them to carry non lethal protection which will give them enough time to escape from a dangerous situation
