How to Make Paper Ties

    • 1). Cut a piece of colored paper down to a square. To do this with a rectangular sheet of paper, place the paper vertically and fold the upper right hand corner down until it meets the left edge of the paper. Crease the paper so the edges line up and cut off the excess paper sticking out from below the fold. Unfold the paper, and you have a square.

    • 2). Fold the paper in half to create a diagonal crease. If you folded the paper to make a square, you already have this crease. Place the paper with the patterned or colored side facedown on the table, and turn it to resemble a diamond instead of a square.

    • 3). Fold the right corner of the diamond over to the center crease and flatten. Repeat with the left corner. Fold the top point down four inches, or more if you want a large knot in your tie. Fold the point back up so the tip meets the crease from the fold you just made. Grasp the last crease you made and fold up past the top of the paper as far as possible without unfolding the paper completely. Then crease it.

    • 4). Find the tiny triangle located on either side of the shape you just created and fold the triangle up. Unfold the triangle after creasing thoroughly. This helps the paper fold more easily in the next step.

    • 5). Flip the tie over. Grasp the right corner and pull it in to the center crease. As you pull, the top area where you just folded the triangles should bend and form a triangular shape. Press down on the shape to help the paper fold and crease it when the paper lies flat. Repeat with the left side. Flip the paper over.
