How to Write a Play Report

    • 1). Organize the notes you took during the play. Use this list to brainstorm any other thoughts or questions you had about the play that might be useful as your write the first draft. Include information not only about the story, characters and performance, but about technical details such as costume design and setting, the lighting and the direction.

    • 2). Write a basic outline. Include an introduction and conclusion. Make a statement for the main idea of every paragraph. The first paragraph after your introduction should include production information, so use your program to jot down the title, author, director, date and venue of the performance. Write a focus for each following paragraph, using your notes from Step 1 as a guide. For example, one paragraph might describe the director's vision, the next a main character's performance and the third a message or moral you believe the story was trying to convey.

    • 3). Compose a list beneath the statement that represents each paragraph and include both your own thoughts and analysis of that topic, as well as specific examples from the play that support your claims. Everyone can interpret a play in their own way, so don't be afraid to say what you thought, so long as you back it up with examples from the production.

    • 4). Take each part of the outline and write the first draft by expanding it into a full paragraph with complete sentences. Include your overall thoughts on the play in the introduction, then summarize those thoughts again in the conclusion.

    • 5). Read your play report out loud both to check for grammatical errors and for flow. Revise and edit your report as many times as necessary before you turn it in to your teachers.
