    • 1). Register with a school in Wisconsin that offers phlebotomy training, such as Waukesha County Technical College or Milwaukee Technical College. All schools have different registration procedures so you will need to contact the school directly in order to register.

    • 2). Complete all coursework. Phlebotomy training typically takes only one semester to finish. Some of the required courses may include medical terminology, medical law and ethics, and pediatric phlebotomy, according to Waukesha County Technical College. Other courses may include hematology, special procedures, and safety and infection control. At the end of your training, you may be required to pass a proficiency exam, but all schools have various requirements. Once you graduate, you should have the knowledge to draw blood through venous and capillary techniques, and to prepare specimens for testing,

    • 3). Prepare to take the test to be nationally certified as a phlebotomy technician, if you choose to do so. The national certification test is not necessary in order to acquire employment as a phlebotomist, however, according to the HealthCare Training Center. This certification exam requires at least one of the following criteria: completion of an accredited phlebotomy program along with at least 100 successful donor collections, at least one full year working as a donor technician in an accredited facility, or completion of an RN or LPN accredited program. This certification is available through associations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the American Association of Medical Personnel (AAMP), or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

    • 4). Apply for national certification through one of the associations described above. For example, if you are applying through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, go to its website and fill out the application. Mail the completed application along with college transcript, appropriate fees, and reference forms to the ASCP office. You can also apply online with a credit card.

    • 5). Schedule an exam appointment. Once you receive your admission letter in the mail, you will be given directions to make an appointment to take the exam within three months at any Pearson Professional Center.

    • 6). Take the exam. Go to the Pearson Professional Center of your choice and take your certification exam via computer. You will be given your pass/fail grade immediately afterwards. If you pass the certification exam, you will receive your certificate within four to six weeks. This certificate will be valid for three years.
