How to Break Up a Basement Cement Floor
- 1). Check with your city's permit department and obtain any necessary permits before breaking up your cement basement floor. Hire a middle man (usually a contractor) to collect these permits, if required.
- 2). Dress in appropriate clothing that is not baggy or loose enough to become trapped in the machinery. Cover your arms, legs and feet completely and pull your hair back securely. Do not wear jewelry, but do wear a hardhat, steel-toed boots, work gloves, protective goggles and a paper mask or respirator.
- 3). Begin in the farthest inside corner of the room and work your way toward the exit to avoid becoming trapped. Choose a setting for the pavement breaker that is easy for you to control, then break up the cement by working in small sections.
- 4). Remove the broken-up cement by scooping it into buckets with a shovel and moving these buckets out as you go.
