How to Explain the Birth of Jesus to Small Children
- 1). Pick out the simple details from the birth of Jesus that the small children can understand and relate to. These might include Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem, staying at the inn with the animals and the shepherds and wise men who visited Jesus.
- 2). Tell the story first so the children know the basics. Keep this brief and use pictures and other visuals to help them learn. A picture book can be helpful, or you can use things like a baby doll to represent Jesus in the manger.
- 3). Ask the children to draw what they believe the nativity scene looked like. This will help them remember where Jesus was born, the setting and who visited.
- 4). Let the children act out the nativity scene. There should be plenty of parts to play, including Mary, Joseph, the innkeeper, the shepherds, the wise men and all the animals.
- 5). Play a game where the children each provide a sentence about what happened during the birth of Jesus in order of how it happened. Encourage the children to help each other when someone gets stuck or skips an event.
