Timber Floorboards Care & Cleaning

    Keep Down the Dirt

    • Timber floorboards come from an almost countless number of tree species. Protect all types of timber floors from exposure to dirt and grit. Sand grains will scratch the finish with every footstep, so use doormats and small rugs to remove dirt from your shoes and feet before you enter the room. Keep a dust mop nearby, and use it frequently to avoid etching traffic patterns into the floorboards. Use felt or cork pads on the feet of tables, chairs and other furniture. Avoid dragging furniture across the floor--instead, lift items to move them.

    Avoid Direct Sunlight

    • The pigments in timber floorboards are not meant to be exposed to strong sources of light, and direct exposure to sunlight can cause fading. To keep the deep and rich hues of your timber flooring, use curtains or blinds to prevent direct sunlight from striking the floorboards. If this is not possible, use a finish that is UV-protected.

    Humidity

    • Timber floorboards are made up of once-living cells that require a certain amount of moisture to retain their shape and integrity. Excess humidity is usually not a problem unless you get mold or mildew. Low humidity can cause cupping, checking and cracking of timber floorboards. Make sure you humidify the air when you use a heater. Air conditioners are another source of low humidity; consider installing a humidifier that works with your air conditioner.

    Cleaning

    • Remove ground-in dirt with a damp mop. Use as little water as possible to avoid warping or cupping the floorboards. Never leave spills or stains to dry. Wipe up any accidents as soon as possible to avoid having the stains leach into the wood. Do not use harsh household detergents to wash a wood floor. Instead, use a soap designed for use on wood.
