How to Bleach Denim at Home

      Use a bleach pen to add patterns to your denim. Don't do this while you're wearing the item you're bleaching. Wash the item once the pattern has faded to your satisfaction.

      Create a distressed look by combining bleach and water in a spray bottle. The ratio depends on how heavily bleached you want the denim to look. Spray it on in patterns or in specific areas like the cuffs and waist area. Wash before wearing.

      Fill your washing machine with water and add 1 cup of bleach. Run the agitator for a few seconds and put your denim in. Let it sit for up to five minutes then finish the wash and rinse cycle.

      Hang your denim out in the sun after washing it. Don't put it in the dryer. The sun will bleach the fabric. You may need to repeat this several times.

      Look for a product called Fast Fade, made by Rit Dye. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

      Put one part bleach in four parts of water in a container big enough to hold your denim. Twist or fold the denim while it's wet for a tie-dyed effect and put it in the container. Leave it for one to three minutes depending on how faded you want it. Remove and wash.

    • 7). Make faded patches by pouring bleach directly onto the fabric. Be careful not to splash and don't leave the bleach on for longer than five minutes. Wash.
