How to Ground a Motor Home
- 1). Hammer a grounding rod into the ground within 6 inches of the meter and wiring that is running off of above-ground wires. Leave about 1 inch of the rod above ground. Rods are typically 8 feet long and are made of steel, copper or iron. It is best to use a hole auger to drill into the ground at least halfway, and then hammer the grounding rod in the rest of the way.
- 2). Measure out from the first rod to a distance of 6 feet.
- 3). Hammer in a second grounding rod in the ground at the distance measured in Step 2.
- 4). Run a grounding wire from the exterior disconnect box to the closest grounding rod. Tighten a clamp around the rod at ground level and attach the wire to the clamp.
- 5). Extend the wire across the ground to the second rod. Attach to the rod in the same manner.
- 6). Cover the wire and rod with 2 inches of soil so that no one trips over it.
