Description of the Weeping Willow
- Weeping willows display a broad crown of cascading branches that will often reach the ground. Leaves are narrow and 2 to 5 inches in length. The short trunk of the weeping willow features gray or brown bark.
- Weeping willows grow between 30 and 70 feet tall and up to 40 feet wide.
- Weeping willows thrive near water and prefer growing Zones 4 through 9. They prefer partial to full sun and will grow in well-drained areas in a variety of soils, including clay and sand, as well as soils that are acidic or alkaline in nature.
- Significant watering is required in dry conditions. Pruning branches when trees are young is important to retain a healthy tree.
- The invasive root structures of weeping willows may spread into septic systems or pipes, so plan accordingly before planting. If near water, falling leaves of weeping willows will decompose, possibly threatening aquatic life.
