Do it Yourself Bathroom Tiles
- 1). Vacuum the subfloor and mop it with a cleanser.
- 2). Measure the walls and make a mark along the base of the wall in the middle of the walls. Snap chalk lines between the marks on opposing walls to divide the floor into four equal quadrants. The center if the floor is where the lines intersect.
- 3). Mix a batch of thinset mortar, following the instructions on the packaging.
- 4). Begin covering an area of the floor in the center of the room that measures about 2 feet by 3 feet. (Stay inside one quadrant.) Apply the thinset evenly with the smooth edge of the trowel, then create ridges in the thinset by running the notched edge of the trowel through the mortar.
- 5). Lay the first tile onto the floor in the corner of the quadrant. Put tile spacers around the edges of the tile, and set the next tile into position on the floor. Work toward the side wall, adding thinset as needed. Continue laying tiles until you either reach the wall or can no longer fit the tiles.
- 6). Begin laying a row of tiles perpendicular to the first row, starting in the center of the room. Continue laying tiles until you reach the wall.
- 7). Repeat this process until the quadrant is complete. Leave any areas where you cannot fit an uncut tile uncovered for now. These places include the edges of the walls, next to the shower or bathtub and areas around the pipes for the sink and toilet.
- 8). Lay the tiles in the other three quadrants, using the same method you used for the first quadrant.
- 9). Measure and cut tiles to fit along the edges of the walls and the pipes in the floor with a wet saw. Allow the thinset to set for the time specified on the packaging.
- 10
Scrape away any mortar that seeped up through the gaps between the tiles with a putty knife. Remove the tile spacers with a pair of needle-nose pliers. - 11
Mix a batch of grout, following the instructions on the packaging. - 12
Place two scoops of grout onto the floor in one of the back corners of the room. Run the grout float diagonally over the tiles. Make several passes with the float to completely fill the gaps between the tiles with the grout. Spread excess grout into the next section. Continue doing this until the entire floor has been grouted. Allow the grout to set for the time specified on the packaging. - 13
Wipe down the tiles with a damp sponge to remove the excess grout. Rinse the sponge frequently as you do this. Wait about 45 minutes. - 14
Wipe the hazy film off the tiles with paper towels.
