How to Refinish a Wood Floor Surface

    • 1). Load the floor buffer with the heavy flooring screen. Run the machine over the floor in the direction of the floorboards' grains until there's no shine left.

    • 2). Vacuum the floor.

    • 3). Re-load your buffer with a medium screen. Go over the floor again in the same manner as before. Vacuum.

    • 4). Repeat the process a third time with the fine screen. Vacuum up any dust; the presence of dust during the application of the gloss will result in an imperfect surface.

    • 5). Pour a puddle of polyurethane onto the floor at the edge furthest from the doorway. Make the puddle the width of the head of your floor gloss applicator. Set the applicator in the puddle and drag it slowly across the floor, moving with the boards' grains. Apply the polyurethane to the whole floor, pouring more gloss as you go.

    • 6). Let the gloss dry for eight hours. Sand the entire floor lightly by hand with fine sandpaper, just enough to take off the shine. Vacuum up the dust.

    • 7). Repeat the process for a second and third layer of polyurethane, sanding lightly between the layers. Don't sand after the third layer. Let the polyurethane set for two days before walking on it.
