How to Get Income Taxes for the Past Three Years
- 1). Open your web browser and go to the IRS Forms and Publications page. You will need Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return). If you also require a transcript, you will need Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). A transcript is a legal substitute for an exact copy of a 1040 tax return that is acceptable by lending agencies and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Click on the last three years consecutively to access and download the forms to your computer. Alternatively, have the forms mailed to you by calling the IRS directly at 800-829-3676. To access a free copy of your transcript, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and follow the prompts.
- 2). Print out the forms for each year and complete the fields with the required information. Include name, Social Security number, the tax return years requested and your current address. List prior addresses if you moved and your current address is different. Double-check all information.
- 3). Write a check or money order for $57 for each of the three years separately, payable to the "United States Treasury." This is the fee the IRS charges for retrieving the tax returns.
- 4). Mail the completed forms with the checks included to the address provided in the form instructions. Allow 60 calendar days to receive your copies, according to the IRS.
