How to Sync the Canon Flash Speed
- 1). Attach an external flash to your Canon digital or film camera by sliding the flash onto the camera's hot shoe and securing the flash in place by tightening the locking ring.
- 2). Turn the camera and flash on, and set the exposure mode on the camera to Shutter priority or any of the programmed modes that the camera has. If set to Shutter priority, consult the manual for your specific camera and set the shutter speed to the maximum sync speed. A general rule of thumb is, if your camera is a digital camera the flash sync speed is 1/250th of a second or less. If your camera is recent film model the sync speed will be 1/125th of a second or less, there may be some models that are 1/250th of a second. If your camera is a manual film camera, the sync speed will be 1/60th of a second or less.
- 3). Hold the camera to your eye and compose the picture you want to take. Look through the viewfinder and look for the diagonal lightning bolt on newer cameras. This icon will let you know the flash is ready to fire, and the camera recognizes there is a flash attached to the camera.
- 4). Press the shutter release button to take the picture.
