How to Preserve an 1800 Family Bible
- 1). Fluctuating temperatures in the basements and attics of a house can be particularly damaging to your old Bible. Always store your old Bible in a cool dry place to prevent it from swelling and contracting. Ensure there is adequate air circulation to prevent the pages from becoming brown and decaying.
- 2). Keep your Bible out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
- 3). Your Bible should be placed in an upright position preferably in a custom storage box, which is readily available in archival supply stores.
- 4). Keep your old Bible away from any and all sources of food and drink and always wash hands before handling it.
- 5). Limit the use of your old Bible to prevent damage that comes from regular handling.
- 6). Remove all notes, paper clippings, photos, and other memorabilia that may have been inserted into the Bible.
- 7). In the event the Bible sustains or has sustained any kind of damage, take the Bible to an expert to get it repaired.
- 8). If you want to make additions to the records of your family history, use an archival ink pen which can be purchased from any craft store. The acid in the regular ball point ink can damage the paper fabric.
- 9). Use an archival shelf liner that has a foil backing and an alkaline-buffered surface for the bookshelf. You can purchase this from a conservation supply store. You can also opt to store your family Bible on a metal shelf or enclose it in a glass display case.

While opening the Bible, be gentle. Old books should never be forced open as the glue used can snap and damage the binding. - 11
While turning pages, do not lick your fingers. Even a small amount of moisture is a breeding ground for mold growth.
