    • 1). Determine whether you have a 5.1 or 7.1 system. Both configurations include a subwoofer, a center speaker, and left front, right front, left rear and right rear speakers. A 7.1 system also includes left side and right side speakers.

    • 2). Place the subwoofer, center speaker and the two front speakers near the front of the viewing area. Position the front left and front right speakers to the left and right of the center speaker, respectively. The subwoofer can be placed under or behind the TV.

    • 3). Mount the rear speakers on the wall behind the furniture or place them on speaker stands. The speakers should be aligned so that they create a "sweet spot"; do this by pointing the rear right speaker toward the front left speaker and pointing the rear left speaker toward the front right speaker. You'll create an "X" of sound in the room for full coverage.

    • 4). Position the left side and right side speakers on their respective sides, if you have a 7.1 speaker system. The side speakers provide true surround sound by filling in the "X" of sound that is created by the front and rear speakers.
