Installing a New Drain Kit in a Bathtub
- 1). Assemble the drain pipes. Slide a slip-joint nut onto the waste overflow pipe. Insert the overflow tube onto the top of the "T" piece and hand-tighten the slip-joint nut. Slide a slip-joint nut onto the drain pipe. Insert the drain tube onto the left arm of the "T" piece so that the entire assembly creates an "L." The overflow tube should face inward and the drain tube should face up. Tighten the nut. Do not over tighten any nuts or joints. Leave the assembly loose enough to make adjustments when installing it.
- 2). Place one rubber gasket on the open end of the overflow tube and another on the drain tube. Insert the overflow tube into the overflow hole on the back of the tub. Line up the drain pipe with the drain hole in the tub. Some holes may not completely line up and adjustments in the angles of the pipes are necessary. The PVC pipes can also be cut down the size if they are too long. Once the assembly in lined up, you will need someone to hold the assembly in place while completing the next steps.
- 3). Apply a thick layer of plumber's putty to the bottom of the drain flange. Insert the drain basket into the drain hole and screw it into the drain pipe. Wipe away any excess putty.
- 4). Assemble the stopper and trip lever according to the manufacturer's instructions. Adjust the assembly so that the lever and lower arm move smoothly and freely and is the correct length. If the linkage is too short, the stopper will not close completely and the tub will not hold water. If it is too long, the tub will not drain fast enough and clogging will occur.
- 5). Slide the assembly through the overflow drain hole. Secure the trip lever to the overflow cover plate and then fasten the cover plate to the tube with screws. Attach the stopper to the trip lever assembly. Screw the drain cover to the drain basket.
