Skin Care Tips for Men
- Men generally have larger pores and oilier skin than women, which can attract more dirt and grime. Regular cleansing should be an integral part of any man's skin care routine. Use a skin care or face wash product designed specifically for men on a daily basis for best results. Cleansing the skin once in the morning and once in the evening is best. Always wash the face prior to shaving, if possible.
- Shaving can cause ingrown hairs, razor burn, nicks and cuts. To minimize this damage, take a hot shower or wash the face with hot water before shaving to soften hair follicles. Always use a shaving gel that contains vitamins and minerals to help supplement your skin. Apply a thick layer of gel before shaving, and always rinse with cold water to close the pores. Shave in the same direction that your hair grows to avoid further skin irritation.
Moisturize your face with aftershave after every shave. Choose a variety that has no alcohol content, which can dry out your skin. Vitamins and plant extracts usually indicate a healthy aftershave that won't damage skin. Use aftershave on other parts of your body with sensitive skin, including your hands, elbows and feet. Alternatively, a moisturizer formulated for men may be used in place of aftershave. - The sun can cause a significant amount of damage to skin. Overexposure to the sun can cause skin cancer, dry skin, and hyperpigmentation, as well as damage the elastin which helps keep skin taut. Wear a wide brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen before spending long periods of time in the sun, particularly if you regularly work outdoors. Sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and high quantities of vitamin E is recommended, as it will protect the skin and help repair damaged elastin.
- The condition of your skin is directly related to your diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and stay hydrated at all times. Fruits and vegetables contain anti-oxidants which slow the rate at which skin is damaged. Drinking plenty of water will help keep skin hydrated. Consume at least 64 ounces of water a day to keep your skin looking healthy. Avoid drinking dehydrating beverages, such as soda or alcohol.
Exercise is also an important part of skin care for men. Sweat produced while exercising pushes dirt and other debris out of the pores. Exercising on a regular basis will help cleanse the skin, and reduce acne and dryness. Be sure to drink plenty of liquids while exercising to supplement the water that is lost through sweat.
