Proper Way to Display the Flag
- When the American flag is exhibited on the same flagpole with another flag from a state, community or society, the American flag is always displayed on top. When displaying the American flag with flags of states, communities or societies on different flag poles, no flag may be bigger than or placed higher than the American flag. The flag should be the first one raised and the last one down.
When other national flags are flown along with the American flag, each country's flag should be presented from its own pole of the same height. Each national flag should be the same dimension and be hoisted and lowered at the same time. - Inside, the flag should have its own place of respect. Place the flag to the right of a speaker or stage. When displayed with state flags, the American flag should be placed in the middle and at the highest level. On display against a wall, the stars should face the top and be at the viewer's left.
- When the flag is hoisted, it should be done so briskly but lowered gradually. The flag should be exhibited between sunrise and sunset. If it is being displayed overnight, the flag should have a light pointed at it. As the American flag is raised and brought down, it is saluted. As the flag is lowered, no part can touch the ground and should be folded neatly. When an American flag is place on a casket, the flag should be positioned with the stars at the head and above the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered in the ground with the casket.
