How to Prepare for the CSET Exam
- 1). Determine which credential you want to obtain. A single-subject teaching credential authorizes you to teach one subject, usually for grades 7 to 12. A multiple-subject credential allows you to teach all subjects from kindergarten to grade 12. An education specialist instruction credential lets you teach students with disabilities from kindergarten to grade 12.
- 2). Visit the CSET website and review the general information about the CSET program to familiarize yourself with the examination.
- 3). Click on the subject matter of the test you are taking to download a PDF that describes the subject matter requirement of the exam. The multiple-subject exam information is also available for review.
- 4). Click on the test guide section to download actual sample test questions and responses from previous exams.
- 5). Take a sample exam. Compare your answers to the responses to determine your weaker areas and the areas in which you need less study time.
- 6). Purchase a CSET study guide from a bookstore or from an online retailer. Guides often contain several practice tests as well as test-taking strategies.
- 7). Use the flashcard method to help you retain information. Write major concepts and theories on the front of a 3 x 5 card, and write the responses on the back. Review each card and learn the theory or concept. Ask a friend or colleague to test your knowledge by using the cards. Repeat the process until you master each card, then create new ones if necessary.
