How to Add Decorative Molding Over Mirror Clips
- 1). Change the mirror clips to the type that go behind the mirror if they're not already installed. Most mirrors are held up by clear mirror clips, but you can't add decorative molding over these types of clips because they protrude too far off from the mirror. You can purchase clips that go behind the mirror from any home improvement store.
- 2). Lay the mirror flat. Measure each side of the mirror. Make sure to add 1/8" to each side, and keep note of the measurements.
- 3). Take your measurements to Home Depot, which provides cut and miter services for free. (Other home improvement stores may also provide this service for free, but you'll have to call ahead to find out.) Pick out a decorative molding you like and have someone cut the molding to your measurements. Have the corners mitered as well.
- 4). Starting with the bottom piece, use wood glue to attach the decorative molding to the mirror. Using the finishing nails, attach the ends that are not touching the mirror to the wall.
- 5). Using the wood glue, install the sides next by fastening the tips of the decorative molding sides to the already in-place bottom piece. Make sure that you don't overlap the sides of the decorative molding on top of the mirror. Once again, use the finishing nails to attach it the wall.
- 6). Install the top piece by fastening it to the mirror and the sides using the wood glue. Use the finishing nails to attach it to the wall.
- 7). If there are any gaps in the mitered edges, fill them in with the wood putty. If the wood putty is sandable (the container or tube will specify), sand with a fine sandpaper (220-grit) and finish the molding with a stain or paint to your liking.
