How to Prepare an LED Torch Pen

    • 1). Twist open the wide-bodied ballpoint pen.

    • 2). Remove the "guts" of the pen. This includes the fused ballpoint and ink shaft as well as the load spring. Discard these parts. Only the outer shell of the pen should remain in two parts: the front half where the writing tip once came through an open hole, and the back half with the clip to hold the pen securely in your pocket or bag.

    • 3). Stack the button batteries on top of one another, with one positive side touching the other battery's negative side. Positive sides are marked with a "+" symbol. Negative sides are marked with a "-" symbol.

    • 4). Cut a 1/4-inch wide, 1 1/2-inch long strip of electrical tape, and use it to secure the batteries together.

    • 5). Slide one terminal wire of the LED light between the two batteries until it sticks out the other side of the battery stack by at least 1/4 inch. Slide the other terminal wire between the tape and the surface of the top battery until it, too, sticks past the stack by 1/4 inch or more. The LED will light up at this point.

    • 6). Slide the entire LED and battery unit into the front half of the pen shell, LED first. Seat the LED snugly into the tip of the pen so that the light shines out through the hole where the ballpoint once emerged.

    • 7). Cut a piece of acetate or stiff, plastic sheet into a 1/4-inch wide by 4-inch long strip. Fold the strip in half lengthwise to create an off-and-on switch for the pen torch.

    • 8). Slide the open ends of the plastic strip over the terminal wire sticking out from between the two batteries. Push the strip in until it slides between the two batteries, wrapping one of the terminal wires in plastic and interrupting the LED circuit. When the plastic slides into place, the LED will turn off, leaving a prominent plastic pull switch.

    • 9). Twist the back end of the pen shell into place. Store your pen torch until needed.

Twist open your pen torch and pull out the plastic pull tag. The pen torch will turn on. Twist the shell closed and use your light. Open the shell and reinsert the pull tag to turn the pen torch off.
