How to: Sand Carving
- 1). Pick a site that will not be flooded out at high tide and is clear of the shoreline. Take a bucket and fill it with water. Bring it to the site on which you want to sculpt.
- 2). Prep your tools. Sculpted sand needs to be formed within a frame much like a cake pan is used to help form a cake's structure. The easiest way to do this is to use a tube shape. This can be done by removing the bottom of an old plastic container with a box cutter. You can also purchase buckets specially built for sand sculpting that already have the bottom removed or use old PVC piping.
- 3). Set the form into the sand about one or two inches deep and using your shovel, fill the form. Slowly pour the water into the form and allow it to set. You will know that the sand has set when the water stops draining. You will want to roughly add as much water as you have sand.
- 4). Remove the form whether its a bucket or container and using simple kitchen utensils; start to remove the sand to form a sculpture. For beginners, a simple plastic spoon works quite well. Remember that you are going to make mistakes and may have to start over from scratch, but have fun while learning; pretty soon you'll be amazed at the designs you can achieve.
- 5). Repeat the setting and sculpting process for the structure you desire. As you gain experience, you can construct larger and more elaborate molds to make your sculptures using plastic sheeting or specially built wooden frames.
