Live in the Southwest? Check out the Trees and Shrubs for the Southwest Book
About.com Rating
If you live in the Southwest, you know how difficult it can be for trees and shrubs to grow properly. Conditions are hot and dry in what seems to be a perpetual state of drought. Unless you pick plants that are naturally adapted to these circumstances, you might have some of your garden suffer and possibly even perish.
I was glad to receive a copy of this book for review. The first 80 pages cover general tree and shrub care.
As I thumbed through Trees and Shrubs for the Southwest: Woody Plants for Arid Gardens, I noticed that each species mentioned had a matching picture. I am always glad to see this since it's easier to imagine if it will work in your garden if you can see an actual picture of it instead of just reading a description.
I also like the fact that there are a wide variety of species included. So many people imagine yucca and cacti when they think of the Southwest. This can be a resource in other areas if you are trying to do a drought tolerant garden, though note facts like Zones to make sure it will grow well for you.
Mary Irish manages to show that you can have vibrant colors with less water. I highly recommend this book to gardeners in the Southwest.
