How to Make a Lag Switch Without the Light Switch
- 1). Take the wire stripper and use it to strip a couple of inches of insulation off the Ethernet cord. Be gentle while cutting off the insulation to make sure you do not cut the Ethernet cord, or any of the wires inside the insulation, in half.
- 2). Locate the solid orange wire that was exposed by removing the insulation. Make sure the wire is a solid orange color and not striped.
With some Ethernet cords, the green wire must be used instead of the orange one in order for this to work. There is no way to tell which one must be used until you finish creating the lag switch and test it out. - 3). Use the wire stripper and cut the orange (or green) wire in half.
- 4). Use the wire stripper and strip off about an inch of insulation at each end of the severed orange (or green) wire to reveal the thin copper wires.
- 5). Take one end of the orange (or green) wire and tightly wrap its thin copper wires to the "Off" point of the toggle switch. Do the same with the other end of the orange (or green) wire, but tightly wrap it around the "On" point of the toggle switch.
- 6). Test the lag switch to check if it works. If it does not work, you may have to go back to Step 2 and use the green wire instead.
- 7). Use electrical tape to secure the orange (or green) wires in place on the toggle switch.
- 8). Use the electrical tape, or heat shrink tubes, to recreate the insulation that you stripped off the Ethernet cord earlier.
