How to Edit With a DVR

    • 1). Use a DV cam with a DVR for in-camera editing, or patch another device into the DVR. A VCR can be patched into a DVR. Any patch from one device to the next includes three color coded cables, usually red, yellow and white. The red cable patches the video from one source to the next and the yellow and white cables patch the left and right sound channels.

    • 2). Patch the video and sound cables from the output plugs on the DV cam, VCR or other player to a monitor. Hook up a monitor to see the source video and the recording video. Patch the video and sound cables from the source device output plugs to the monitor input plugs.

    • 3). Patch another three-prong cable from the source monitor's output plugs to the recording device input plugs. A second monitor can be patched from the recording device or DVR. The cables will be patched from the output plugs on the recording device to the input plugs on the second monitor. No patch is required for a DV Cam with a built in DVR.

    • 4). Insert the appropriate source tape. The source tape refers to the tape that contains the original material. The source tape will be transferred to the recording tape when more than one device is used. For example, a VCR source tape would be transferred to the DV recording tape in the DVR. For single-tape editing with a DV cam with a built-in DVR, the single DV or mini-DV source tape will be the same as the recording tape.

    • 5). Cue the source tape. Hit play and then pause so that it is ready to play, when the recorder is started. Cue the DV tape or DV disc in the DVR. Hold down the "Start" and "Record" buttons at the same time. Press the "Pause" button.

    • 6). Push the "Pause" button on the DVR or recording device five seconds in advance of the source tape. Push the pause button on the source tape and watch the shot or scene play through. The image on the source monitor should be the same as the image on the recording monitor.

    • 7). Push "Pause" on the source tape at the end of the shot or scene transfer to the recording tape. Then press "Pause" on the DVR or recording device. Rewind the recording tape a few seconds to the end of the last shot. Cue your next take and repeat the process.
