How Can I Make a Battery Powered Electric Fence So My Dog Won't Dig Under the Fence?
- 1). Mount a battery-powered fence controller on the inside of one corner post of your fence. Hammer a grounding rod into the soil at the base of the post, leaving the top of the rod exposed. Hang the controller high enough on the fence that the dog can't jump up and touch it.
- 2). Place an electric fence bracket at 12-inch intervals along the inside of your fence. Start at the corner underneath the controller, attaching a bracket 4 inches up from the ground with a hammer and nails. Continue attaching brackets to the bottom of the fence until you've circled the entire yard.
- 3). Wrap a length of wire around the top of the grounding rod, and connect it to the grounding prong on the back of the fence charger. Larger electric fence systems use three grounding rods, although one rod is sufficient enough to ground a small fence.
- 4). Thread the end of the wire around the positive prong on the controller, twisting the wire around the post multiple times to ensure a good connection. Pass the wire down to the first bracket, pulling it taught and wrapping it once around the end of the bracket.
- 5). String the wire along to the next bracket and, wrapping it around the end as in the previous step. Wire the entire fence line in this fashion, attaching the end of the wire to the negative post on the controller to complete the fence and close the electrical circuit.
- 6). Install a battery into the controller, and turn the power switch to the "On" position. Check the fence with a fence tester, touching the tips of the tester to the wire at every bracket. The tester will display a green light if the fence is working properly.
