Guide to Using Pebbles in Florida Flower Beds
- Consider the color scheme you are planning for your flower bed. Because pebbles are available in a wide variety of colors, including white, off white, coral, orange, green and variegated combinations, you should be able to find some that match your landscaping plans.
- Choose plants that thrive in rock gardens. Pinwheels, phlox, oregano, lithodora, ice plants, hens and chicks, cranesbill, blue-eyed grass, basket of gold, stonecrop, spurge and rockery orchids all thrive in Florida's USDA zones.
- Help prevent weeds by putting down a layer of plastic before you plant your flowers. Cut holes in the plastic to allow room for planting and watering each of your plants. Once you've planted your flowers, cover the remaining area with landscaping pebbles.
- If you don't want to cover the entire flower bed with pebbles, try using them to line the edges of the garden instead. Or, use the stones to create a walkway through the center of the garden. Either way, you may wish to use subtle landscape edging to help keep the pebbles in place.
