Early Childhood Lesson Plan Ideas
- This interactive lesson involving a gingerbread man incorporates a lesson on the letter "G" while teaching children about fairy tales and stories. It also gives them an opportunity to practice a hands-on project. Read "The Gingerbread Man" to your students and explain that the word gingerbread starts with the letter "G." After reading and discussing the story, pass out gingerbread cutouts that the children can color and decorate with sequins and buttons.
- Discuss spiders and insects with your class and present a book with the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song for them to sing along with. Teach the children the words to the song and also the hand motions that accompany the song, such as the spider moving up the water spout. The students will enjoy acting out the hand motions and singing along with you to this song. This is a fun way to incorporate movement into their day while teaching them about music and rhymes.
- Learning about shapes and colors is an important part of the early childhood experience. Young students are also learning how to count. This lesson plan incorporates all three of these important lessons into one activity. Make a poster of a large caterpillar shaped like the letter "C." Color each coil or circle shape on the caterpillar with a different color and label each section with a different number. Have the children practice saying the different colors with you, and then count from one to ten with the numbers on the caterpillar.
- Give each child a laminated sheet with his name stenciled on it. Give the children non-toxic dry erase markers and have them trace their names over the stencils on their laminated sheets. This will help your preschoolers practice their fine motor skills while learning how to write letters and spell out their names.
