• 1). Frost the entire faux finish, making sure to frost the overlapped area the most. Frosting means painting a light color over the dried finish to lighten it. With a light hand, paint a single, thin coat of a light color that doesn't cover your finish, but blends in well. Pay special attention to the overlapped area, frosting it with a medium coat to make it level with the rest of the wall again.
  
  
• 2). Smoke the entire faux finish, making sure to smoke the overlapped area the least. Smoking is an alternative to frosting, used when you have painted with darker colors that are difficult to lighten. Smoke with a dark color that corresponds with the color scheme of your faux finish. Paint a single, thin coat over the finish. This diminishes the appearance of the overlap.
  
  
• 3). Haze your entire faux finish as an alternative to frosting or smoking. Hazing means painting on a light coat of the base color, which is the pure color that sits underneath the pattern of your faux finish. Haze the overlapped area with a lighter stroke than you used for the rest of the wall.
  
  

Restart Your Project

• 1). Repaint a full coat of your base color over the entire faux finish. Restart with your base color if hazing, smoking or frosting didn't work. Let the first coat of your base color dry. Repeat until the faux finish has disappeared completely under the base color.
  
  
• 2). Paint your faux finish in small sections. Mark off sections that you can paint quickly, moving on to the adjacent section before the first section dries completely. If the first section dries before you begin painting the next section, you will see distinct lines in your result.
  
  
• 3). Overlap sections as you paint. While this seems contradictory, overlapping the paint while it's still wet will eliminate visible overlaps once the paint dries.
