Planting Anemone Bulbs
- Anemone rhizomes can be planted outdoors in the fall and mulched well or planted in the spring. Spring plantings can either be started indoors or planted directly out into the garden soil, depending on your climate. For fall planting make sure to get the rhizomes in the ground at least six weeks before the ground freezes. Soak the rhizomes in clean water overnight to hydrate them before planting. Place the rhizomes 3 inches deep in the soil at 6-inch intervals. Cover with displaced soil and water well. In USDA Zones below 5, start the rhizomes indoors in pots in early spring and then plant them outdoors after all threats of frost have passed. In Zones 5 and above plant the rhizomes directly in the ground or containers outdoors after the last frost.
- Anemones prefer rich, well-drained soil that is sort of sandy to aid in drainage. They also prefer an acidic to neutral soil pH with optimal levels ranging from 5.6 to 7.5 pH. They will thrive and bloom most profusely in full-sun locales that have some afternoon shade relief in hot climates. Feed with a water-soluble bulb fertilizer when you see green shoots emerge in the spring. To extend the blooming period, harvest the flowers for use in arrangements, or deadhead spent flowers and stems. After the seasonal bloom period ends, slowly taper down watering and allow foliage to die back.
