Keep it Cool

• Getting a clean cut with your cookie cutter depends on a few basic things. The dough should be kept refrigerated until it is time to be rolled; this will keep the dough firm. The dough should not be sticky when touched. To prevent this from happening you may need to add a small amount of additional flour to the dough, or rub flour across the rolling pin. A fourth of an inch is generally good thickness for the dough. If it's rolled too thin it will be more difficult to transfer to the baking tin. Use a flat metal spatula to move the cookie from the cutting surface to the baking tin. If there is difficulty moving the cookie because of an intricate design, keep the cutter on the cookie until it is on the cookie sheet and then remove the cutter.
  
  

Metal Cutters

• Metal cutters can be kept in the freezer or refrigerator before use to ensure a clean cut. Wipe the edges to remove any moisture and keep checking the edges to keep them clean. Keep a small amount of flour near your work area to dip the cutter edge in; this will also help achieve a clean cut.
  
  

Unusual Cutters

• Cutters come in a multitude of sizes and shapes and can be purchased at discount stores and even craft stores. If the cutter size that you need is not available then you can do a search in your home for everyday items that could suit your needs. Cutters can be made from empty medicine bottles that have been cleaned. The bottles are normally 1 1/2 or 2 inches in diameter and the baking time would need to be reduced to ensure the cookies do not become overdone. This small size can be used for the center of a flower to add dimension. Add the center to the flower before baking. Cans that once contained fruit or vegetables can also be utilized once they have been cleaned and dried thoroughly. Turn the can or bottle upside and press into the dough the same as a traditional cookie cutter.
  
  

Extra Bonus

• Cookie cutters can also be used to decorate cakes. This will only work with cutters that just have a shape with no handle attached. Hold the cutter as close to the cake frosting as possible and sprinkle the inside with colored sugar crystals, cocoa or other decorations.
