The are a lot of people that are wanting a new sewing machine.
Some are thinking about an upgrade to their current model - but for many this is a first time purchase.
Do you think you are ready for your own sewing machine? How do you choose? Let's look at the 2 basic questions you need to ask yourself.
1.
What will you use the machine for?
What kind of projects will you be creating and where? Things to consider are...
  • Types of material you will use.
Different fabrics will require certain capabilities of a sewing machine.
Fabrics like denim or leather will need a much more stronger machine than basic cotton fabric will need.
  • Types of projects you will do.
Are you simply wanting a sew machine to make simple repairs to a seam or hem OR are you wanting to make your own clothing or window treatments.
The more involved the project is - the more advanced the machine will need to be.
  • Where will you use this sewing machine? Do you have a permanent place for it to reside or will it need to be portable? Is it something that you will keep in a closet until you need it and then it will go to the kitchen table for your project? Does it need to be totally portable - will you need to take it to other places? Maybe you are helping out at your child's school or wanting to take it to sewing classes.
How easy is it to take with you?
2.
How often will you use the sewing machine?
Are you going to be a occasional or serious user? Things to consider are...
  • I this a once and a while hobby or a serious passion? If you are only going to use a machine now and then, you probably do not need one that has as many advanced features as a serious sewer does.
  • Are you planning to learn and expand your sewing skills and want a machine that can grow with you? Do you want a machine that you can learn new skills with? Many of the new computerized machines have the capacity to download new options from the computer
  • You have to consider what you need at the moment and what you might need in the future.
If you are wanting a machine that you can grow with a computerized model can be ideal
